An esports PC is designed with consistency and responsiveness as the priority, rather than maximum visual fidelity, which means the budget is weighted quite differently to a standard gaming PC. Competitive titles such as CS2, Valorant, League of Legends, Overwatch and Rocket League are played at 1080p on lower graphics settings to maximise frame rate, and at those settings performance is limited by the processor rather than the graphics card. A regular gaming PC prioritises the GPU over the CPU, as it is rendering demanding single-player titles at high settings and higher resolutions. An esports PC puts more thought and cost into a high single-thread processor, fast memory, and less into the graphics card than an equivalently priced general gaming system.

The processor matters more, as competitive titles at lower settings are limited by single-thread performance rather than graphics power. AMD's X3D processors perform especially well in CS2 and Valorant due to their large cache. Pair it with a graphics card capable of clearing your monitor's refresh rate at 1080p, 16GB of RAM as a minimum or 32GB of RAM for more comfort, and an NVMe SSD, which helps to shorten load times without affecting the frame rate. A wired Ethernet connection is strongly recommended rather than Wi-Fi, as it assists in removing the jitter and packet loss that cause inconsistent behaviour in fast-paced shooter fights, though it cannot reduce your base ping to the game server. Latency is a chain rather than a single number, running from your mouse through the PC to the display and out to the server, so the monitor and peripherals deserve attention, as well as the components inside your case.

Aim for a frame rate that comfortably exceeds your monitor's refresh rate, which would typically be 240fps or more for a 240Hz display and at least 144fps for a 144Hz one. Lighter titles such as Valorant, League of Legends and Fortnite in performance mode reach these figures on mid-range hardware, while CS2 and Overwatch 2 can be more demanding on the processor and require a more powerful CPU to hold those numbers in a team fight. Running above your refresh rate still helps, as each frame is completed faster and the image sent to the display carries far more recent information, which is why competitive players cap well above their panel's rate rather than at it. The most important thing is consistency of the lowest frames rather than the average, as a drop during a fight is what actually costs you the round.

For a solid entry-level esports build, an AMD Ryzen 5 or Intel Core i5 processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 or AMD Radeon RX 9060 graphics card, 16GB of DDR5 memory, and a 1TB NVMe SSD would hold high frame rates at 1080p across all the major competitive titles. For competitive esports, it is recommended to prioritise the processor before the graphics card: an AMD Ryzen 7 X3D or Intel Core Ultra 7 paired with an RTX 5070 or Radeon RX 9070 and 32GB of memory will sustain the frame rates a 240Hz, or faster monitor can display. Storage capacity is worth planning for separately, as some games such as Call Of Duty can take up a lot of space on its own. Consistency across the esports gaming PCs would matter more than peak specification on any single PC, as every student would need the same experience for full competitive fairness. A Ryzen 5 or Core i5 processor with an RTX 5060 or Radeon RX 9060, 16GB of memory and a 1TB NVMe SSD will run the titles used in UK student competition comfortably at 1080p. Additionally, pairing capable esports PCs with 60Hz office displays discards most of the benefit, so it is recommended to budget for at best 144Hz panels across the suite. In competitive gaming, frame rate stability always takes priority over visual quality, as higher and more consistent frame rates make it easier to track moving targets, judge timing, and react to information the moment it appears on your monitor. Lower graphics settings also minimise visual clutter from effects like shadows, particles or foliage, which is why many professional players run low presets even on hardware capable of far more. The exception is resolution, since dropping below your monitor's native resolution introduces scaling blur that makes distant targets harder to read. The best approach is native resolution, low to medium settings, and whatever configuration keeps your frame rate above your refresh rate consistently.

Yes, and the graphics card, memory, and storage are all straightforward to change as future game requirements grow. Storage is the first upgrade people commonly make, as competitive titles receive large updates often for game seasons, and modern shooters take up a lot of space. Processor upgrades can depend on the motherboard socket and chipset, so if you expect to change CPU later, it can be worth choosing a motherboard with a longer upgrade path before purchasing.
