PC Components

Our PC buying guide will help you every step of the way. From understanding the different PC components to exploring our range of systems, to even learning how to use our website's configurator. By the time you purchase your new system, you'll know exactly what goes into it.

1. Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The CPU is the main number-crunching 'brain' of a system. It's what programs (by-and-large) run on - though it does occasionally call upon the aid of other processing units.

Key Players: AMD and Intel

2. Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

The Graphics Processing Unit job is to process high quality images to the screen as quickly as possible. Ideally, it needs to do this sixty or more times per second.

Key Players: AMD and Nvidia

3. Memory

When your computer needs to remember something temporarily, it uses the sticks of RAM (Random Access Memory) that slot into the motherboard. The more RAM you have, the more applications you can efficiently run at the same time. Run out of system memory, and Windows will lean into the storage drive, which causes things to slow down.

Key Players: Corsair and Kingston Fury

4. Storage

If memory is where your computer puts stuff in the short-term, then storage is where data is stored for the long-term. Stored data doesn't get erased when you switch the machine off - it's where games and crucial software are kept.

Key Players: ADATA, Samsung, Seagate and Western Digital

5. Power supply

Your computer's components need power. That's the job of the power supply. It needs enough wattage to keep everything running. Fortunately, our configurator comes with a battery icon that'll help you keep track of what's required.Check out the 'How to use our website section' above to learn more about our configurator.

Key Players: ADATA, Corsair and Cooler Master

6. CPU Cooler

Every calculation your PC makes produces a little bit of heat. A quality cooler will help keep core CPU temperatures down and ensure a stable system that lasts for years.

Key Players: Corsair, Cooler Master, EKWB, and NZXT

7. Motherboard

The motherboard is arguably the most important component of all. It's what allows the various components that make up the system to connect to one another. Your choice of motherboard will determine which CPU, GPU and RAM you can use, and how easily they'll all be able to talk to one another.

Key Players: ASUS and MSI

8. Case

The case is just the big box that the components go in, right? Well, sort of. It'll need to be large enough to accommodate the motherboard and power supply, while still providing enough room for airflow to keep the parts cool.

Key Players: Corsair, Cooler Master, Lian Li, Thermaltake

Desktop PC vs Laptops

Desktop PC

Desktop

Desktops are larger machines, designed to stay in one place. They tend to be more powerful for gaming, editing and streaming pound-for-pound, but they do need a monitor, a keyboard and a separate mouse to operate.

Laptops

Laptops

A laptop is a great solution for on-the-go gamers and professionals. All of the same components are inside, but they need to be engineered slightly differently to deal with the heat of a smaller space. What you gain in convenience, you tend to lose in power.

Setting your budget

A machine needn't cost the earth - but larger budgets can stretch to premium components. You might spend as little as £500, or as much as £3000+, depending on the experience you're after.

Component costs tend to be extremely volatile, especially with supply chains facing seasonal disruptions. Moreover, we regularly update our pre-built systems with the latest components to ensure they provide the best value for money. As such, you can expect the cost of different systems to vary semi-regularly.

It's worth bearing in mind that this does not include the cost of peripheral devices like keyboards, mice and monitors - there's also the cost of delivery to think about, but we strive to be as upfront as possible about these costs. Take our Build My PC Tool for a spin, and tailor your requirements and budget.

Custom Build PCs

Custom Build PCs

A custom-built machine is put together according to your specifications. They allow you to get exactly what you need - but the turnaround is roughly twelve working days. This allows us to build and test the machine.

Next Day PCs

If you don't want to wait, there are our pre-built PCs. We've got them already built in a range of configurations, and they can be shipped to you within one working day.

Liquid Cooling PCs

Liquid Cooling PCs

If you're going to be a serious gamer, you'll need a PC that can push its components to the limit without overheating; this is where a cooling system comes in. Our customisable and immersive Hyper Liquid range ensures gamers get the very best from their PC's components.

Editing PCs

Editing PCs

Video editing and other productivity-focused tasks require a slightly different approach, which emphasises CPU performance rather than the GPU. Our editing PCs are built with this in mind.

VR Ready PCs

VR Ready PCs

Virtual Reality needs a powerful system. You need high frame rates across two displays for an optimal experience. The result? Unparalleled immersion!

Simulator PCs

Simulator PCs

Some of the most demanding titles on the PC are those that simulate the real world. Microsoft Flight Simulator is a game that requires a beast of a machine to run well - and that's just what our Simulator PCs do!

If none of the systems we offer quite fit the bill, then why not swap out a few components? Just swap them out using our configurator, and we'll take care of it for you.

PC Accessories

All PC Accessories can be found in the configurator and added to your PC order, they can also be found to buy separately in our Gear store.

Monitors

Monitors

A monitor will need a high enough refresh rate to display all the frames that your graphics card provides! 60hz is standard, 144hz or higher is better. Look for 1080p, 1440p or 2160p (that's 4k).

Headsets

Headsets

Without quality sound, you're missing out on half the experience! Headsets can come with or without microphones.

Keyboards

Keyboards

To get effective control in your gameplay, you need the right keyboard. The best come with mechanical switches, whose throws are measured in millimetres. Look for RGB backlighting for a more customisable experience.

Mouse

Mouse

Blast those enemies with a quality mouse. Precision is measured in dots per square inch (DPI). Strategy and Role-playing game (RPG) gamers might look for extra buttons on the sides, too.

Microphones

Microphones

Discrete microphones are great for streamers. If you want something that plugs straight into your computer, look for a mic with a digital USB connector rather than the three-pronged analogue one that's favoured by musicians.

Order Now

Speakers

Speakers

Hi-fi speakers should plug straight into your PC's audio output without the need for a separate amp. Subwoofers provide extra bass for that cinematic experience during those on-screen explosions.

Bluetooth Adapters

Bluetooth Adapters

Not every motherboard comes with built-in Bluetooth, but this is easily fixed with an adaptor. Coming in the form of miniature dongles, they slot straight into the motherboard and provide Bluetooth functionality, allowing you to connect wireless mice, keyboards or headsets to your system.

Webcam

Webcam

Streamers need webcams, but then, so does anyone working from home! A good webcam provides a generational leap in quality over the one built into a laptop or phone.

Sometimes, you might find that you have more devices than can comfortably fit into your computer. Extra ports can be added with the aid of a USB hub. Get some spare cables and you'll ensure that you're always connected.

The router that your broadband provider gave you might not be fit for purpose, especially if you're installing extra software and using huge amounts of bandwidth. Make the upgrade and you'll get added functionality and performance.

Power & Surge Protection

Power & Surge Protection

A PC is a pretty robust piece of hardware - but if you want peace of mind, it's worth investing in surge protectors. That way, you can be certain that your valuable storage drives aren't going to be zapped, whatever happens to the mains power.
