Fable (Also known as Fable 4) is on the horizon: Coming to PC and Console

Few Xbox franchises carry the same nostalgia as Fable. For many players, the original games defined fantasy RPGs during the Xbox 360 era, blending humour, morality systems, chaotic combat, and a very British sense of charm into something genuinely unique. After years of rumours and speculation, the long-awaited reboot is finally on the horizon, and anticipation is building fast.

Naturally, that excitement comes with a lot of questions. When is the new Fable coming out? Will it be on PS5 and PC, or will it be Xbox exclusive? And can the reboot actually live up to the legacy of the originals?

This guide covers everything we currently know about the Fable reboot. We’ll cover:

What is the new Fable game?

The new Fable, technically Fable IV, is a full reboot of the fantasy RPG franchise originally created by Lionhead Studios in 2004. Development is now being handled by Playground Games, the studio best known for the hugely successful Forza Horizon 5.

At first glance, a racing studio taking over a fantasy RPG might seem unusual, but Playground Games has built a reputation for technical polish, beautiful open worlds, and impressive environmental detail. Those strengths are exactly what a modern Fable game needs.

Rather than simply remastering the original Fable, Fable II, or Fable III, this reboot appears to be a complete reimagining of the Fable universe for current-generation hardware. Early trailers suggest the game is leaning heavily into the series’ trademark mix of fantasy adventure and tongue-in-cheek humour rather than trying to become a darker, more serious RPG.

That’s important because the personality of Fable is a huge part of why fans still remember it so fondly.

What’s got everyone so excited?

The reboot is more than just another nostalgic revival. For Xbox, it represents a chance to rebuild one of its most recognisable fantasy franchises at a time when prestige RPGs remain hugely important to platform identity.

It also fits perfectly into Microsoft’s wider Game Pass strategy. A massive first-party fantasy RPG launching into Game Pass instantly becomes one of the platform’s biggest selling points, especially if the game reviews well and shows off modern Xbox hardware properly.

For PC players, it’s another sign that Microsoft now sees Windows gaming as equally important to the Xbox ecosystem rather than an afterthought.

When is Fable coming out?

At the moment, the reboot is targeting a winter 2027 release window, listed on Steam as the 23rd of February. While players originally expected the game earlier, the extended development time suggests Microsoft is positioning it as one of the major Xbox releases of the generation rather than rushing it out the door.

Given the scale of modern open-world RPGs like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077, that longer wait is not especially surprising. Games of this size require enormous amounts of development work, especially when they’re aiming for advanced visuals, reactive worlds, and large-scale exploration.

Which platform is it for?

Officially, Fable is currently planned for universal release across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. This is good news for anyone with a PS5 who expected Fable to be an Xbox exclusive.

However, if there’s one platform the reboot is clearly designed around, it’s the Xbox Series X. The new Fable is expected to act as a technical showcase for Xbox hardware, with large fantasy environments, fast loading times, detailed lighting systems, and dense world design all playing a major role.

This is exactly the kind of game Microsoft needs. For years, Xbox has faced criticism for lacking enough blockbuster single-player exclusives compared to PlayStation. Reviving Fable gives the platform a chance to re-establish one of its most recognisable RPG franchises while also demonstrating what current-generation hardware can do.

The reboot also feels particularly important because fantasy RPGs remain one of the strongest genres for creating long-term platform identity. Games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are over a decade old but continue to dominate discussions years after release, and Xbox clearly wants Fable to sit in that space again.

Fable on PC: What we expect

PC gaming is now central to Microsoft’s overall strategy, so it’s no surprise that Fable PC support is being treated as a major priority.

Unlike older Xbox exclusives that sometimes felt secondary on PC, the reboot is expected to launch simultaneously across Xbox and Windows platforms. That’s particularly exciting for players with high end gaming PCs, ultrawide monitors, or high refresh-rate setups.

Modern fantasy RPGs benefit enormously from powerful PC hardware. Higher frame rates, increased draw distance, ray tracing, and more detailed environments can completely transform the experience of exploring a large open world.

Given Playground Games’ technical expertise, expectations are understandably high for the PC version. If the optimisation is handled properly, Fable could end up being one of the most visually impressive RPGs available in 2026.

Fable PC requirements

Official system requirements have not yet been confirmed, but based on modern RPG standards, players should expect reasonably demanding hardware requirements.

For 1080p gameplay at lower settings, most modern mid-range gaming PCs will likely be fine. Any recent Intel or Ryzen processor, 16GB of RAM, and a capable graphics card should comfortably get the game running.

Players targeting higher settings, 1440p resolutions, or smoother frame rates will probably want significantly stronger hardware. Modern RTX-class GPUs, faster SSD storage, and potentially 32GB of RAM could all become important depending on how ambitious the game’s visuals are.

That might sound demanding, but it’s increasingly normal for large-scale RPGs in 2026. Open-world games are becoming far more detailed, especially when advanced lighting systems and environmental effects are involved.

Fable (2026) FAQs

What kind of game will the Fable reboot be?

Although full gameplay details are still emerging, the reboot appears to be retaining many of the core elements that made the original series popular. For a start, unlike other recent successful fantasy releases Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the game will have traditional hack-and-slash mechanics rather than turn-based combat.

From what we’ve seen so far, fantasy role-playing, humour, magic systems, player choice, and open-world exploration all appear to remain central to the experience. That’s reassuring for long-time fans, because the original games stood out largely thanks to their personality.

Fable never tried to be relentlessly serious. Instead, it balanced fantasy adventure with satire, awkward humour, and bizarre side characters in a way few RPGs ever managed. Early footage suggests the reboot understands that identity, rather than trying to turn Fable into a dark fantasy game.

How many Fable games are there?

If you’re completely new to the franchise and wondering how many Fable games there are, the mainline series currently includes three core titles: the original Fable, Fable II, and Fable III.

There have also been spin-offs and experimental projects over the years, but the reboot is effectively acting as a fresh starting point for the franchise rather than continuing directly from previous storylines. That means newcomers should be able to jump in without needing extensive knowledge of the older games.

Which is the best Fable game?

As excitement for the reboot grows, many players are revisiting older entries and debating which game was actually the best. For most fans, the conversation usually comes down to either Fable II or the original Fable.

Fable II is often considered the high point of the franchise because it expanded the world while keeping the humour and player freedom that defined the original. Meanwhile, the first game still has a devoted fanbase thanks to its atmosphere and groundbreaking morality system.

Fable III tends to divide opinion a little more, although many players still appreciate its larger-scale story and ambitious ideas.

The reboot now faces the challenge of modernising the series while still capturing what made those games memorable in the first place.

Are there other games like Fable?

If you can’t wait for Fable to come out, look for titles that replicate Fable’s mix of humour and fantasy. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning are worth looking into, as well as the Dragon Quest series on the Nintendo Switch. Still, Fable’s tone has always been fairly unique, which is part of why so many players are eager to see the reboot succeed.

The new Fable reboot is shaping up to be one of the most important RPG launches of 2026. For Xbox and PC players especially, Fable has the potential to become exactly the kind of large-scale fantasy adventure the platform has been missing. And if Playground Games can successfully combine modern visuals and gameplay systems with the humour, charm, and freedom of the originals, this reboot could end up being one of the defining RPGs of the current generation.
