Everything we know about GTA 6 so far

Whether you’re old enough to remember Vice City before the definitive edition or GTA 5 is your time in Los Santos,  GTA 6 has been a long time coming. One of the most eagerly anticipated games of all time, we’ve had to wait 13 years to see what Rockstar has in store. After some delays, it looks like we’re almost at the finish line, with a release date scheduled for later this year.

Fed up with waiting? While we can’t make Rockstar work faster, we can give you the lowdown of what to expect from GTA 6 to get you hyped. From confirmed gameplay to rumoured features, we’ll cover everything you need to know ahead of launch- including whether your console or gaming PC can handle it.

Release, price, and platforms

When is GTA 6 coming out?

As of March 2026, Rockstar has confirmed the scheduled GTA 6 release date as Thursday, 19th November 2026. That’s eight years since development began in late 2018.

As any gamer who hasn’t been living under a rock knows, the game has been pushed back… a lot.

Although not officially confirmed, it was first believed that the next instalment would be released in late 2025. In May of that year, Rockstar confirmed a release date of 26th May 2026, only to give fans déjà vu by pushing this back to the 19th November a few months later. At the time of writing, the game is still set for that November 2026 release.

As the situation remains more complex with a multitude of factors stirring up possible further complications, including the extensive development this game has undergone. An AAA title generating this amount of buzz needs to meet expectations, and further push back is always a possibility. Keep an ear to the ground for more news on the situation as it unfolds.

How much will GTA 6 cost?

Since the release date is still some time away, GTA 6’s price has not yet been confirmed by Rockstar. Rumoured prices range between £69.99 and £79.99 for the standard edition, and £89.99 to £109.99 for premium editions. This generally fits the pattern of other recent AAA titles. For instance, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launched in November 2025 at £69.99, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows released in March 2025 at the same price.

How much will GTA 6 make?

In terms of revenue, GTA 5 made an incredible $1 billion dollars within its first three days on the market, and whilst this achievement was truly impressive, GTA Online is still set to be one of the most profitable games in history. Amazingly, despite PC gamers contributing just 3% of total weekly revenue, the game has generated approximately half a billion dollars a year since its release in 2013.

GTA 5 accounts for 220 million units sold, for comparison- Rockstar had managed to sell 320 million units across all previous titles. The period covering the release of GTA 5 and GTA Online (2013-Now) made an estimated £7,402,500,000 in revenue. Forget professional ray tracing and realistic flight simulation; Rockstar has made enough to buy an airport in real life, from one game.

We all know the hype hasn’t slowed down, and it’s widely predicted that GTA VI’s revenue will be record-breaking.

GTA 6 system requirements

Console availability

There hasn’t been a lot officially confirmed on system requirements, but we do know that GTA 6 will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Series S at launch. It’s unlikely we’ll see the game on PS4 or Xbox One, as the hardware on those older consoles probably won’t handle the game’s advanced graphics and open-world scale.

You may have heard some rumours about a release on the Switch 2 at some point in the future, but take these with a big pinch of salt. The game will likely need a very powerful CPU or GPU to run smoothly, and the Switch 2’s current hardware limitations make a port extremely unlikely. Considering the Switch hasn’t received GTA 5 or even GTA 4, it’s safe to say that a Switch release is probably off the table.

PC release

A PC release is yet to be confirmed, but it’s widely considered a safe bet that one will come eventually -it’s more a case of when than if. While it is unlikely to be launched alongside console versions, rumours have been swirling around a late 2027/early 2028 release window for PCs.

GTA 6 file size

There is also no official confirmation on GTA 6’s file size, but it will probably be upwards of 150 GB, possibly 200 GB or more with updates. This large size reflects the advanced features expected in the game, such as higher pedestrian density, parallax mapping, and other graphical and simulation improvements.

Performance expectations

On consoles, GTA 6 will likely target 4K/60 fps on Xbox Series X and PS5, with scalable resolutions and frame rates on the Series S. Advanced features like ray tracing, realistic AI, and complex physics may impact performance on lower-end hardware.

Online and connectivity

If GTA 6 includes an online mode similar to GTA Online, players will need a stable internet connection, and additional storage may be required for regular updates and expansions.

World, story, and gameplay

Where is GTA 6 set?

GTA 6 returns to Tommy Vercetti’s home of Vice City, 40 years after the original setting. Players can expect to see all the things we love about Vice City return, including a road inspired by the iconic Ocean Drive. Rockstar describes Vice City as the “sun and fun” capital of America, so we can expect to see the same vibrance and glamour we saw back in 2002, but on a whole new level.

Vice City is thought to be the key area in GTA 6, but it is just one part of a much wider map. The game is expected to span the entire state of Leonida, which is based on Florida. Aside from Vice City, there are five other areas confirmed by Rockstar:

  • Leonida Keys: A more laid-back and down-to-earth region compared to the bold and brash Vice City. Beware, though—it also has “the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America.”
  • Grassrivers: The first wetland environment in a GTA game, complete with wildlife like alligators, crocodiles, and other (less deadly) animals.
  • Port Gellhorn: Once a tourist hotspot, this area is now rundown, mostly made up of empty malls and old motels.
  • Ambrosia: An old-school, working-class town with a sugar refinery and a prominent biker gang that has significant control over the area.
  • Mount Kalaga National Park: When you need a spot to lie low, Mount Kalaga National Park is there. As well as being a rural hiding spot, it is the perfect place to do a range of outdoor activities, from fishing to hunting. But tread carefully, as Rockstar warns it is also home to “hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals.”

GTA 6 characters

From the mysterious Claude to the eccentric Trevor, protagonists have been the heart of GTA games, and GTA 6 is no different. This time around, there are two protagonists, plus a selection of colourful supporting characters.

Lucia Caminos

Many fans already consider Lucia to be one of the most exciting parts of GTA 6. While female characters were playable in the original Grand Theft Auto, she is the first non-optional female protagonist outside of the 2D universe. Lucia, despite her opening being her release from a stint in prison for an indiscernible crime, appears level-headed and intends to make a better future for herself. She’s also shown gleefully partaking in a criminal lifestyle alongside Jason- it’s obvious she’s a go-getter, ambitious and gritty. As a star in the GTA world, she’s going to be a cool, fun-to-play character, possibly one to add to the list of the best female characterisation in video games.

Here’s everything we do know about Lucia so far:

  • She was born in Liberty City.
  • She strives for a good life and is willing to do whatever it takes for it.
  • When we meet her in GTA 6, she is freshly released from Leonida Penitentiary. We don’t know why she was there in the first place, just that she was “fighting for her family”.
  • She is wearing an ankle monitor in the game’s artwork. We see in the trailer that she loses the ankle monitor at some point, but it isn’t yet known when.
  • As well as the ankle tag, we can see her doing what looks like community service in the second trailer
  • She looks set to be a fighter. According to Rockstar, “Lucia’s father taught her to fight as soon as she could walk”. The trailers show her wearing a gold boxing glove necklace and participating in what appear to be underground fights.
  • She appears to be in a relationship with Jason.

Jason Duval

Jason is our second GTA 6 protagonist. While Lucia wants a good life, Jason’s main priority is an easy life. Unfortunately for him (but fortunately for us), the criminal underworld keeps dragging him back in.

Here’s everything we know about Jason so far:

  • He grew up around criminals.
  • He’s an army veteran who joined as a troubled teen trying to sort his life out.
  • He has worked for drug runners in Leonida Keys, and the second trailer suggests he is still doing so.
  • We can see him performing other criminal acts in the trailers aside from drug running, including armed robbery.
  • It looks like he has a close relationship with Brian, one of the game’s key supporting characters.
  • He appears to be in a relationship with Lucia.

The supporting characters

The protagonists may be who we see the most, but side characters can make or break the game. And we’ve seen plenty of memorable supporting cast in GTA over the years, from villains like Catalina to sidekicks like Lamar. Here’s everything we know about the side characters in GTA 6 so far:

  • Brian Heder: Based on the trailers, Brian seems to be one of the largest characters outside of the two protagonists. He’s an old-school Vice City veteran, who was a drug runner during the golden smuggling age in the Leonida Keys (meaning there’s even a chance he crossed paths with Tommy Vercetti). We know that he’s still moving product through his boat yard, has a (third) wife called Lori, and lets Jason live rent-free in one of his properties in return for helping him with some shady business.
  • Cal Hampton: Cal is Jason’s friend and Brian’s associate. He doesn’t seem to get his hands dirty, instead taking a behind-the-scenes role, similar to Lester in GTA 5. Outside of this, we know he’s a big-time conspiracy theorist, which could make for some entertaining (and slightly unhinged) side missions.
  • Boobie Ike: Boobie is one of the biggest names in Vice City today. A true rags-to-riches success story, he is a major player in the world of business in GTA 6, involved in everything from real estate to recording studios.
  • Dre’Quan Priest: Dre’Quan has one clear ambition: making it in the music industry. While he’s been involved in the lower ranks of the criminal underworld, this was solely to help him break into the industry and create his own label, Only Raw Records.
  • Bea-Luxe and Roxy (AKA. Real Dimez): Long gone are the days of Love Fist: in 21st-century Vice City, the rising stars are rap duo Real Dimez. Bea-Luxe and Roxy have been best friends since childhood, and are now signed to Dre’Quan’s label, Only Raw Records. Outside of music, they use social media to build hype and boost their brand further.
  • Raul Bautista: Perhaps one of the most intriguing of the supporting characters we’ve been introduced to so far is Raul, an expert bank robber, described as having “confidence, charm, and cunning.”

The story

There’s still a lot we don’t know about GTA 6’s storyline based on the first two trailers. What we do know is that, early in the game, Lucia is released from prison but remains on an ankle tag. We also know that Jason is involved in drug running, and the two protagonists appear to be in a relationship.

Outside of this, Rockstar hasn’t confirmed much, other than they are in the “middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida”. Many fans have speculated that GTA 6 seems to be a Bonnie and Clyde-inspired story, and we can see that trust is a major theme running through the two initial trailers.

Keep an eye out for any further trailers (not that they’ll be hard to miss!). In the coming months, we’ll likely see at least a couple more, perhaps focused on gameplay and the protagonists like the trailers we saw in the lead-up to GTA 5.

The gameplay

Now onto the bit that matters the most to players: the gameplay. Unsurprisingly, GTA 6 is pushing things forward with big gameplay advancements, as well as bringing back some mechanics we know and love from previous games.

Like in GTA 5, players can switch back and forth between protagonists during missions. But leaks suggest that in GTA 6, we may see a completely new gameplay perspective: being able to control both protagonists at the same time during certain missions. This is a complete game-changer that will add whole new layers of strategy.

The policing in Vice City is getting an upgrade, too. The first trailer shows police body cam footage in action, which could have a big impact on gameplay. Leaks also indicate that wanted levels may trigger social media alerts, making it even harder to shake off those stars.

Speaking of social media, it is taking a huge leap forward from GTA 5’s “Bleeter”. Trailers feature live streaming and short-form video content. Social media is likely to impact certain missions too, especially in missions regarding the Real Dimez duo, Bea-Luxe and Roxy.

When it comes to NPCs, we’re seeing more advanced reactions than ever before. Their behaviour reacts to in-world events, they might even remember the player, and developed dialogue systems make interactions feel dynamic and immersive.

There are a few other rumoured gameplay features, including an advanced health system similar to RDR2’s, and weight mechanics, which haven’t been seen since GTA San Andreas. But take these with a pinch of salt, as there is yet to be concrete evidence to back these claims up.

Activities

It looks like we have plenty to do outside of the missions, with loads of different activities to try out. Here are all the activities we have seen so far in the trailers:

  • Gym workouts
  • Basketball
  • Cage fighting
  • Scuba diving
  • Fishing
  • Robberies
  • Races

There are also some activities that have appeared in leaks or trailer hints, but aren’t officially confirmed:

  • Cage fighting: Footage of Lucia in underground fights suggests a return (the first since Ballad of Gay Tony)
  • Dancing: May be a mini-game or NPC interaction
  • Gambling: Expected in casinos or similar venues
  • Gaming: In-game consoles or arcades are rumoured
  • Golf: A classic GTA pastime, possible return
  • Hunting (land and ocean): Likely based on leaks
  • Kayaking: Water activities hinted at in leaks
  • Pool: Possible minigame, unconfirmed
  • Taxi driving: May return as a side activity

The vehicles

GTA 6 promises an incredible variety of vehicles, with over 200 confirmed so far (GTABase). Fans of Vice City will be pleased to see classic rides like the Cheetah, as well as franchise staples like the Banshee.

Customisation looks deeper than ever, with leaks suggesting players may be able to fine-tune tiny details like mirrors and seat positions, while full performance and visual upgrades will allow you to put your personal stamp on every ride. Rockstar is also reportedly bringing their most realistic driving system ever, making every chase, getaway, or cruise feel totally immersive.

The weapons

GTA 6 is bringing an arsenal of weapons, from smoke grenades to sniper rifles. Leaks suggest that players can expect more customisation than ever, letting you tweak attachments and personalise your loadout for missions or free roam.

The same leaks hint at an expanded inventory system, with backpacks and duffel bags allowing you to carry more weapons at once. While Rockstar hasn’t confirmed every detail yet, it’s clear that weapon variety and quality are bigger and better than ever.

Will GTA 6 have an online mode?

It’s a question on everyone’s minds. After all, GTA 5’s revolutionary online mode has been a great success, with a daily average of over 60,000 players in 2026. While Rockstar hasn’t officially confirmed an online mode for GTA 6, it’s very likely that we’ll see one at some point. The real question is whether it will launch on day one or arrive later as a separate update.

Will we see references to past GTA games?

It would be odd to see no references to past GTA games, especially with a return to Vice City. Although the 3D and HD universes are canonically separate, we have still seen a few San Andreas Easter Eggs pop up in GTA 5. For example, in GTA 5, an OG Loc gold record hangs in Franklin’s house, and in the mission Hood Safari, three Chamberlain Gangster Family members wear outfits similar to those from the Sweet & Kendl mission in San Andreas.

But will there be any nods to GTA 5 in the upcoming sequel, or even any returning characters? While we’ve had no official confirmation, it’s certainly possible. GTA 5 brought back some GTA 4 characters, including Niko’s ex-girlfriend Michelle Cannes and Rocco Pelosi, the antagonist from the GTA 4 spin-off The Ballad of Gay Tony.
