Anyone who was planning to use an ATI card for graphics and a cheap and cheerful Nvidia card for Physx should scrap their plans now:

I've seen this done in XP and 7 but never managed to pull it of myself. Seems really nasty of nVidia to do this. Hopefully someone will hack the drivers so it'll work again. The worst part is that PhysX may get disabled on systems with onboard ATi GPUs and discrete nVidia cards.

I didn't think it was possible in XP/Vista anyway, but had heard that W7 allowed running of the two types of cards in the same system.
Was thinking of looking into it in case PhysX took off a bit more, but after reading this news won't bother. Hopefully Nvidia cards won't disable PhysX in machines with integrated GPUs as they should be disabled through the BIOS so the Nvidia card shouldn't see it. D |

Nvidia have hobbled ATi cards in Batman: Arkham Asylum by disabling AA for ATi cards. Does this constitute anti-competetive behaviour?

Would have thought so. Very underhand anyway, could force throughdrivers I suppose. Or Omega or someone will find a way.

I'll be playing it on PS3 anyway (Ł25 on ebay!) - I'm not buying any more games for PC that Nvidia have delayed due to paying for PhysX to be implemented - even if I do switch back to an Nvidia card at some point in the future.
But how can they do that? Definitely anti-competitive if true. It was quickly proven that AA does work in the game with an ATI card - you just have to force it through the control panel ... except now the damage is done - lots of Joe Publics have seen that option in the settings that say AA only works for Nvidia and will remember that when it comes to upgrade. Rumours also that they have stopped PhysX working in systems with ATI cards and the old Aegia PPU cards (link). D |

"If we hadn't done anything with Batman, for example, what we would have had is the continuing end of PC gaming," /me shocked at the blatant melodrama Edited by licenced - 03/Oct/2009 at 08:54 |

I have run this patch on a system with a 9500 GT and 3870x2, 4870x2 & 4890. With GPU PhysX enabled I got 33330 Vantage CPU Points from running the two 'CPU Tests' without GPU PhysX the i7 960@4.17GHz on Asetec LCLC 240mm got ~25k. This may work in Vista once you have the DX11 patch but I cannot confirm it yet. I did this from a fresh install which makes life easier. If you add an nVidia card to an ATi setup it should work pretty much the same. If you are Upgrading your primary graphics from nVidia to ATi then uninstall the nVidia graphics and PhysX drivers. Download the crack: 32-Bit 64-Bit Install the latest GeForce Driver Don't reboot. Run the crack and click on Cake (for once it's not a lie) Now reboot Right Click the desktop->Screen Resolution Detect Click on the greyed out monitor (Check it belongs to the nvidia card) In Multiple Displays select 'Try to connect any way: on VGA' Apply 'Extend these displays' Apply Right Click Desktop->nVidia Control Panel->Set PhysX Configuration->Enable->Apply Recent games to use this on are Batman & Mirrors Edge Enjoy degimpifying you rig so you can play stuff the way it's meant to be hacked Luke Edited by Cyber_Tech - 29/Oct/2009 at 16:27 |
