![]() Topic: Pulsing noise for a few minutes on start up?Posted: 26/Jul/2012 at 11:00 |
|
Again, I know I'm posting a lot but I'd like to be sure.
A few questions about my order (which so far is working great). 1. The PSU is generating a small buzzing/humming noise. Is this normal? It's noticeable but I think that's because I'm right beside the PC. So far there is no problems but I'd like to be sure. 2. On start-up, there is a weird pulsing noise coming from the PC. Again, so far nothing is wrong, but is it a problem? I think it is the Hard Drive but I honeslty haven't checked so don't know. It does go away after a few minutes. 3. This one is a bit off topic, but how long does your replace parts warranty last? Say there was a fault, how long would I have until you guys wouldn't replace it? I think I chose standard warranty. So far so good and I am loving the machine. But these 2 problems/hick -ups I've noticed since receiving the machine and from what I remember, they weren't here when I first booted the PC up. So are they problems? Do they have solutions? EDIT: I do have strong belief the pulsing noise is the Hard Drive. Put my ear up to it and that's where the noise in coming from. Also, it actually doesn't go away on start up. It just came back. EDIT 2: Also, when I turn the fan speed down, the PSU noise gets a little more prominent aswell as the HDD noise. It's expected but is it normal? Edited by ArcAngel - 26/Jul/2012 at 11:39 |

First things first, hide your order number pal ;)
1. Might be useful if you tell them what PSU you have (brand/Watts). If you have a cheaper PSU it could be just it trying to work a little harder but im afraid you'll have to wait on CTs reply on this one. 2. Do you have a disk in your optical drive? mine revs up every so often if there is one in there. What HDD do you have? 3. 1 Year, this is because it gets very hard to source the same part a year down the line. Technology moves too fast sometimes! Hope that helps bud! Thanks for the reply!
1. It's the Corsair 850W HX Modular PSU. So, I don't think it's a cheap one. 2. I have a Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATAIII HDD and a Corsair SSD 60GB. 3. Good to know, thanks. |

Hmm yeah you do have decent components. I cant really comment on what the noise levels of them are but i know some HDDs can rev up at times so that pulsing could be that.

Okay, thanks. I'll wait to here from CP. I don't think there is a problem, and if they give a full year to get replacement parts then there is plenty of time tyo see if a fault does arise.

The Seagates are known to park their heads and can give a 'thunk' when they do.
To rule out the optical drive and HDD simply unplug them. Also check each fan by stopping it (carefully and gently with a finger on the centre). If you have watercooling it could be pump noise. |

Okay, what about the PSU? I think it is the fan, but to check would I need to unscrew the entire thing? Or can I access the PSU fan from the bottom of the PC? (I would check, but it means pulling everything out) Although if it's what you recommend iI'll try it when I get the chacne.

You should be able to get at it fron the bottom of the PC without unscrewing anything.
Use something plastic to stop the fan from being able to spin before you turn it on. |

Okay, from what I can tell (other than my hearing is off) is the fact that it's not the PSU, but it's the GPU. I opened it up while still running and couldn't really hear the buzz/hum from the PSU. So I tried the graphics cards (the GTX 670) and it sounded like that was it. Thinking about it does make sense as when I play a game like BF3 on Ultraa the noise did get alittle bit more prominent to the ears. Again, it's not deafening so I don't think there is a problem, but it does seem likely now that it's from the graphics card. Normal? Abnormal? Broken? Can you elaborate from that information?
And can you confirm you'll replace faulty parts for up to year? |

From research, I'm starting to think it's just the nature of the card. If it is, I'll be a little dissappointed. I'm guessing you guys don't have any other type of 670's other than the MSI available? If so, and if you confirm it is just the nature of the card, is there anyway to return it and get a different brand of 670?

All makes and all brands, AMD or Nvidia. They all make noise under load, unfortunate side effect for us high end gamers. MSI are one of the best card brands out there so id stick with them if i were you.

Yeah, I'm still on the fence. The card itself is fantastic, but I've been reading up on the 670 series in general and it seems like MSI has one of the noisiest.

Inductor whine can be a problem. I had it running 2900 Crossfire many moons ago and when I OC'd an 8800 GTS 512MB to far. If it's the fan making the noise then contact support and see if we can replace or upgrade (the Gigabyte 670s are quiet and run cooler.

I'll take a look tomorrow. Is the MSI 670 the only one you guys supply?

I think I'll phone tomorrow. The fan isn't the noise, it' just the card itself. Before I do call, and if you can answer this question, is it possible to return the card and get a refund for that peice? Then I can order my own and try it? I'm guessing that's not an option. Also, do you have any other brand of 670s available?

Okay, do you know if they have the same kind of noise levels? Are they the same price etc.?

Noise levels on the GTX670 are usually very low. The Gigabyte are even quieter. Speak with support for pricing.
