Quote Coxy Replybullet Topic: Display Driver crashing - AMD
    Posted: 08/Jul/2012 at 19:36
Hi,

Every now and then while playing games or bringing my computer up from sleep it will hand and then I get a message saying: Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

My Graphics card is a Radeon HD 6850 and i'm using the most up to date driver (this also happened on a previous driver)

I have read that this problem could be due to the card not getting enough voltage since the PC has been overclocked but when I run Prime95 over night I don't see any errros.

Could someone advise please?

Try switching to Windows 7 Basic graphics (disable Aero Effects) see if it still happens.

Also are you running 12.6 CAP 1?

I've had issues with 12.5 and 12.6 after updating in-place. The AMD installer sometimes doesn't clear everything and as such you end up with issues. however help is at hand,

Fully Uninstall all AMD Drives from programs/Features

Run Driver Sweeper from Guru3d (Follow instructions) http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

Reboot and install either 12.6 WHQL or the 12.7 Beta, reboot and should be fixed.

OK, that must be 7000 series only, it often helps. Try moving fan to manual 60-80% forced.

You should have power slider.. strange. I can copy mine in when I get home and I have a 6970

You could use MSI Afterburner to do so?

Try bumping up your RAM voltage in BIOS to 1.65V

I checked earlier on another system with a 6850. No power slider.

Try driver sweeper like Mike said, if that doesn't help with a clean install then. Call support to arrange a replacement.

I doubt it, unless you've been messing about in the registry and stuffed things up with no way back a reinstall doesn't usually solve things.

Driver Sweeper will clear everything related to the AMD drivers from the system which is as close as possible to re-install without having to do so. Unless you've got a spare partition to try a fresh install on I'd contact support if you've tried the above.

This is also happening to me on a brand new machine with a 7770 card. No overclock, had the machine 2 weeks.

I'm not doing anything except rendering a video from Sony Vegas.

On the 7770 the power slider to -10% should help.

Removed and re-installed the latest drivers (not beta)

All options are default as they were installed, and i've set it to -10%

Is this correct (pic below)

I had never had this overdrive option set up before though, is this 'safe' for someone who hasn't overclocked?

Last thing I want to do is blow my PSU or GPU up lol

Absolutely fine - what you're doing is actually *Undervolting* the GPU - sometimes artifacts can be caused the power phases on the card giving uneven ripple; this is more noticeable at higher voltages than lower.

This is all under warranty - Luke has advised.

To confirm, I bought the PC with no overclock, it's running an AMD HD 7770 with Winpower 700w PSU.

Should remove the overdrive or not? I set it to -10% on the power slider as suggested, everything else was set as it was when i entered the over drive section.
