![]() Topic: Upgrade PSU?Posted: 30/Jun/2012 at 00:41 |
|
I bought my desktop from cyberpower back in 2009, and it's been running well with whatever I've chucked at it (a large variety of games).
However, over the years the PSU definitely seems to be running quite a bit louder than it used to be. When I'm running a game it is very loud and jet engine like :-\ To the extend it's getting quite distracting. Even when idle, the fan is quite noticeable (and others have commented on it). The PSU currently installed is a Win Power (Model EA4G-850W). I'm wondering whether upgrading this to a better brand PSU would make a difference in terms of noise? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! In case it is of use, here's the full spec of the desktop: ITEMS: ====== Code: UK_ULTRAYINZ £542.00 x 1 £542.00 Ultra Yin (NO MONITOR) www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/Ultra_Yin/detail *BASE_PRICE: [+477] CAS: COOLERMASTER ELITE 310 Mid Tower Case CASUPGRADE: NONE CS_FAN: Default Case Fan CPU: AMD Phenom(TM) II X4 920 Quad-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology ***Overclockable XXX*** [+40] CD: (Special Price) LG 22X DVD+/-R/+/-RW + CD-R/RW DRIVE DUAL LAYER (Black Color) CD2: NONE CABLE: None FLASHMEDIA: None FA_HDD: None FAN: AMD ATHLON64 CERTIFIED CPU FAN & HEATSINK FLOPPY: NONE HOMEINSTALL: NONE HDD: Single Hard Drive (1TB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16M Cache Hard Drive [+19]) HDD2: NONE IEEE_CARD: NONE KEYBOARD: Logitech PS/2 Keyboard (Black) MOUSE: NONE [-4] MODEM: NONE MOTHERBOARD: ASUS M4A78-EM AM2+ 780G Chipset DDR2/1066 SATA PCI-Express MBoard w/GbLAN,USB2.0,&7.1Audio MEMORY: (Req.DDR2 MainBoard)4GB (2x2GB) PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory (G.SKILL PQ Series w/Heat Spreader [+10]) MONITOR: NONE [-62] MONITOR2: NONE NETWORK: ONBOARD 10/1000 NETWORK CARD OVERCLOCK: No Overclocking OS: Microsoft(R) Windows Vista(TM) Home Premium w/ Service Pack 1 [+19] (64-bit Edition) OS_UPGRADE: Upgrade to Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 7 Home Premium [+10] (64-bit Edition) PS_VGA: NONE POWERSUPPLY: 700 Watts Power Supplies [+12] (CyberPowerPC Performance ATX 2.0 Power - Quad SLI Ready) PRO_WIRING: None RUSH: NONE SOUND: HIGH DEFINITION ON-BOARD 7.1 AUDIO SPEAKERS: NONE TEMP: NONE (AS SHOWN) TVRC: NONE UPS: None USB: Built-in USB 2.0 Ports USBHD: NONE VIDEO: ATI Radeon HD 4850 PCI-E x16 1GB Video Card [+13] VIDEO2: NONE VIDEO3: NONE WEBCAM: NONE WNC: PCI Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps Network Interface Card [+8] WAP: NONE WARRANTY: STANDARD WARRANTY: 3-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY PLUS LIFE-TIME TECHNICAL SUPPORT _PRICE: (+542)[/quote] |

Depends on your budget, you could spend £20 - 40 and get the same problem or £80 on a nice one and get some years out of it.
Maybe give sales a call and see if they could sell you one? Just make sure its a good branded one like Coolermaster or Corsair. Edited by azza1991 - 30/Jun/2012 at 09:35 |

Our Cooler master and Xigmatec 500W units are very good value and perform on par or better than the OEM 700W your system has.

Re: the coolermaster/xigmatec units do you mean something like this?
Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 500W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply I've probably not been looking on the right page, but I didn't see a 500W coolermaster/xigmatek PSU coming up as an option on a few on the systems I looked that. (Also, do cyberpower sell individual components or would I need to look else where?) Thanks for your advice :) |

As an existing customer we can sell components. Speak to customer services to make an order.

IT could also be that the PSU has become a bit blocked due to dust build up etc. You can get a can of Dust-off and give the insides a good blasting (whilst off obviously) to clear fan blades and remove rubbish from the heatsinks of the PSU.
Long-term getting a better PSU is recommended though. Mike |

Thanks Cyber_Tech, I've sent an e-mail to sales.
I have been giving the insides a blast with some compressed air, to clear what I can from the various fans/heatsink. I was also wondering about replacing the cpu cooler which is currently just the stock one. Again going along the lines of nice and quiet, that would also fit within my case. What sort of thing should I look at? |

For a CPU cooler the Arctic Freezer 13 is the easiest to fit, has good cooling and may allow for a small overclock to boost system performance.
