![]() Topic: New pc with a few questionsPosted: 19/May/2012 at 16:17 |
|
I was going to buy a pc a few years ago but am so attached to my Grandma Mesh that'll be 10 years old in November (2gb ram, amd fx 53, nvidia ultra 6800 - just to really date it)
Sadly after having more lives than a cat, it's finally given up the ghost with the final I/o error happening this morning. (2 ram ports stopped working, 2 sata not working, no working graphic card, 2 DVD drives won't open even with a pin...it's really dying). Anyway, after a quick funeral and burial in the garden my mind turns to a new pc. I'll post the specs below but before I do a few questions. 1. Is it possible to have all lights inside white? Wife really hates the red! 2. With windows 8 shortly to be released, can we get any kind of voucher that'll entitle us to a free/cheap upgrade? 3. How many USB ports come as standard? 4. This machine needs to last for years to come, mainly used as a design pc with odd gaming session, surfing, etc - will water cooling or over clocking seriously reduce it's life span? Specs as follows: BASE_PRICE:[+1916] BLUETOOTH:None CAS:Coolermaster HAF-X Full Tower Gaming Case W/ Side-panel Window 1x230mm Red LED Fan, 1x200mm Fans, 2xFront USB 3.0 Port CASUPGRADE:NZXT Sleeved LED KIT paired with a three step light sensitivity and on/off light function via PCI [+14] (WHITE COLOUR) CD:Pioneer BDR-207DBK 12X BLU-RAY Burner & 16X DVD±R/±RW Drive (please select the Blue Ray software in the Software section) CD2:Pioneer BDR-207DBK 12X BLU-RAY Burner & 16X DVD±R/±RW Drive (please select the Blue Ray software in the Software section) [+65] COOL:High-Performance Non Conductive Coolant powered by Thermochill [+9] (Clear Colour) CPNR1:Cyberpower Sound Absorbing Foam -- reducing audible noise transmitted through solid case panels by up to 75% [+19] CPNR2:Cyberpower Anti-Vibration Fan Mounts -- reducing the noise transmitted from Fans [+9] CPNR3:Cyberpower Power Supply Gasket -- reducing the noice transmitted from Power Supply [+5] CPU:Intel® Core™ i7-3820 Quad Core 3.60 GHz 10MB Intel Smart Cache LGA2011 ***Overclockable XXX*** [-242] CS_FAN:Max. 3 x 120mm Silent Case Cooling Fans in selected case key areas for ultra silent operation [+23] (1,200 RPM AKASA Silent Fans with Sleeve Ball Bearing 17 dBA and LED light to match the Fans already in the case) DONGLES:NONE EXPAN:Internal USB 3.0 4 Port Hub [+30] FA_HDD:None FAN:Cyberpower Advanced WaterCooling Large Kit (Including 360m Radiator, 750res Pump/Reservoir, Rosa CPU Block, High CFM Fans, Tubing, and Coolant) ***Overclockable XXX*** (Standard Color Tubing) FLASHMEDIA:INTERNAL 52in1 Flash Media Reader/Writer [+9] (BLACK COLOR [-4]) FREEBIE_CS:None FREEBIE_CU:FREE! Having done a bit more research, I have a few supplemental questions:
Does anyone know if the GTX 680 card is compatible with all features of Adobe photoshop CS6? I really don't want to put a quattro card in the machine as they're clearly not well regarded on the Adobe forums but need the graphics card to do all the whizz, bang of the latest version of CS6. The card isn't officially listed as compatible but slightly older gtx cards are listed. Also on the water cooling front, what is the maintenance expectations - refil every year and a complete maintenance overhaul (new piping and full drain) every 3 years?? Final question, do I need to select the blu ray software for the pioneers to work or can I get by without this? Edited by becomart - 20/May/2012 at 16:32 |

1: We may have some white fans, otherwise they'd be left wit no lights.
2: This will go live shortly. Early June iirc. 3: at least 12 with your spec. 4: An S&S OC wont have an impact on lifespan and will increase productivity. Watercooling can prolong the life span of components by reducing their operating temperatures significantly. GTX680 will be fine with CS6 it may take some time for software to adapt to take advantage of the card fully. Watercooling should last the life of the system but water evaporates overtime through the tubing and it may need topping up. The procedure for this is on our YouTube channel. |

Only if you want to watch Blu-Ray movies, if your just burning/reading DVDs and Blu-ray discs then no need but standard 24x DVD drives will be faster for that. Great set up btw Edited by azza1991 - 20/May/2012 at 22:46 |

Hi, thanks for the replies, a few more questions before I cash out the best part of 3k!!
1. My general understanding of the lights issue is that we can't really go white. If I selected the UV package, would we still have uniform of colour or would their still be red lights in the case? 2. Is S&S a better option than XXX for system longevity and stability? 3. As far as Windows 8 upgrade disc is concerned, will I be eligble to be sent a disc if I buy later this week? Can it be forwarded on when it's available? 4. Having watched the you tube video on replacing coolant, I'm fairly confident I could do this myself but not a complete drain. Would this need to be done every few years? Can you define 'life of a system'? Is this 3 years, 5 years, 10 years? |

1: White may be difficult but we have a box of them. They come with the Corsair Carbide 400 so take that case and go max colour and put a not on your order and send me a PM with your order number and I'll make sure it gets built with White fans for you.
2: if you are looking at keeping it running as is for 10 years S&S is a safer bet. I simply don't have long term testing data beyond 5 years. 3: As far as I'm aware it will be $14.99 (no news on UK pricing) for an upgrade voucher for Windows 8. We are waiting for confirmation on this from Microsoft as for now it is a leak: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/14/microsoft-to-offer-15-windows-8-upgrade/ 4: You shouldn't need a full drain, just top it up with DI when it drops below 2cm. A high end gaming PC is usually getting to the point where new games run poorly on it after 3 years, by 5 years it is largely obsolete but functional beyond this things tend to start failing and replacing them gets difficult. By ten years you will probably have a Smartphone with equivalent processing power. Edited by Cyber_Tech - 21/May/2012 at 16:26 |

The answer to this is almost certainly no. As mentioned above, the leak suggests the scheme will be officially announced and will possibly go live in June. Given the leak states that MS will be charging for the upgrade, rather than providing it free like with WinV->Win7 it might have to come from them (perhaps via download) rather than from the PC builder Dave |

The quest for white fans, lights and universal appeal sounds too difficult so I think we'll go for a UV package. On the windows 8 issue, is it conceivable that an online upgrade will be relatively cheap ( <£50 ) or am I going to get stung with an expensive upgrade within a month? I'll try to call in tomorrow to start the wheels moving if there is a gap in the day.
Loving the smartphone analogy by the way, our current Pc is certainly less capable than my iPhone. |

More like £15 than £50 so long as you register your Windows 7 after June 2 as far as I can tell.
