![]() Topic: New Gaming PC - £2000Posted: 03/May/2012 at 00:13 |
|
Hi all,
I'm new to PC gaming, made the move from 360 and can't wait to get started but have little idea of where to start (last built a PC for myself back in.. 1999). I've got around £2000 and another £600 for monitor + mouse + keyboard. I've spent hours playing with specs and I'm completely indecisive. I was thinking of the Zeus Thunder Max or the Liquid i7 Poseidon without any modifications (but I find myself slowly adding loads to them and hiking up the price:P ). I'm probably going to get a 3D monitor (ASUS VG278H) unless someone has a better idea, so will the GTX 680 be suitable? Or should I think of 570 SLi setup? Should I bother with SSD? For 2 grand I want to make sure I'm getting the right system. I want to play mostly shooters (BF3, Crysis etc), and the odd MMO/RPG (and more). Any help much appreciated! Cheers Dave |

I based this on the Zeus Thunder range:
£2570 inc VAT Best balance of performance and value includes: Ivy-Bridge 3570K XXX OC (up to 4.8GHz) GTX570 1.2GB SLi 256GB Crucial M4 SSD + 2TB HDD ASUS 27" 3D Screen Roccat Valo & Kone Keyboard and Mouse. For BF3 in some ways you'd be better with a single 680 as you won't have SLI issues like stuttering and potentially higher minimum frame rates. With £2K for a base unit getting an SSD is advisable and I've included one of the best. To avoid hiking the price too much I've gone with the Non Hyper-Threaded 3570K as some people have improved BF3 performance by disabling Hyper Threading so why pay for a feature you wont need and may cause performance issues. awesome pc :)
stick some fast ram in it while its cheap Thats a big monitor lol, if you wanted to scale down the price a little i would start there. (but of course you don't lol ) Single big cards are always better than smaller SLI cards in my experience, be aware 3d lowers FPS performance but i have no experience in 3d gaming |

As far as I am aware SLi is best for 3D as you have one GPU per eye and get close to equivalent single card 2D performance since the two cards are rendering essentially the same frame with up to 4 inch lateral offset so is an ideal workload for a dual GPU system. So SLi is theoretically better for load balancing than a single GPU in this scenario.

If it was SLi 680 maybe worth it as you can run a non SLi board.

Can you afford it? Extra £400ish for the 690 over the 680. Extra GTX680 is slightly cheaper but you could drop to the £50 cheaper P8Z68V-LX motherboard with the GTX690 so it balances out.

In practice there is nothing that touches this card, not even crysis on full settings......
those monsters are almost like 2 gtx 680's in sli ..... almost....but you would save space and have £800 gfx card most gamers would kill for. also you would need case fans i think, the gtx 690 exhausts heat in both directions , out the back and into the case. With that LX motherboard you have only 1 pcie 16x speed slot so no sli in the future, (but with a card like this would you need it? ) in the end its all about choice and how much you are willing to spend. I beg to differ according to The Hexus:
Crysis2: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/38805-nvidia-geforce-gtx-690/?page=8 BF3: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/38805-nvidia-geforce-gtx-690/?page=7 The hexus tested them at usual gamer resolutions the one you brought up above is at a huge resolution, and as far as i can tell AMD cards have always had the advantage when it comes to really high res, maybe not usual 1980x1080 though. well i suppose its all about what you want, the maximus is a small atx board, the P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 is larger but older.
do you really need that blu ray re-writer. And you havn't selected the Blue ray software you can't play blue ray movies without it, although you could try a free player like this pc advisor review DAPlayer i would drop that for a standard optical drive saving £46 and get the Asus Sabertooth Intel Z77 for +£19. The Asus Sabertooth brand is regarded as one of the best if not the best motherboard you can get for gaming. Edited by insanebe - 09/May/2012 at 00:30 |

To be honest I can only take your word - what I will say is that this has gone from a 'get a gaming PC for around 2 grand' to 'how much can I spend on a gaming PC'.
So if you reckon that board is better than that's what I want in it. Had a little look and does appear to be well rated. Sales team will probably start to get a little tired of me calling them all the time though! Anything other recommendations? I reckon after tomorrow I'll just let them build it :) |

ASUS Range goes:
Rampage/Maximus/Crosshair (best for extreme OCs, tweakers and top drawer gamers, Quad SLi/CFX capability) Deluxe/Workstation/Premium (best for power-users) Sabertooth/Pro/Gene (best for mid range gamers) Vannilla (e.g. P8Z68V) LX (budget overclockers/gamers) For price/performance the Sabertooth and Pro boards are usually the best choice to mid range builds. Gene is best for mATX builds in restricted cases but for the Z77/68 it's actually one of the best clocking boards so consider it for bigger builds where you don't need lots of PCI-E expansion slots. Good choice, I pushed that to 4.8GHz when testing the 3770 so yeah it'll do just fine.
