Hello,
Will a single amd 7970 handle modern games and future releases on ultra setting? |

Currently it is the most powerful single gpu card out there so I would think so. It frequently beats the GTX 580 in benchmarks.

Mostly, it is ~20% faster than a GTX580 at standard clocks.

What is the difference betweem 7950 and 7970? And would 7950 in crossfire be a good enough set-up?

7950 is ~20% slower than 7970, on par with the GTX580 until resolutions get high and the extra RAM comes into play.
7950 CFX is very good, better than GTX590 and alittle faster than GTX580 SLi. Overclocks to 7970 clocks easily too (part of the OC service on the 7950), still not as many shaders as the 7970 so not quite as potent. No watercooling for 7950 though. |

No, Intel currently make the best CPUs and the best platforms for multiple graphics.
Your statement above applies to the buget Llano Platform AMD A Series APUs (e.g. 3870) and budget graphics (upto 6670) where the GPU runs in Hybrid Crossfire with the GPU built into the CPU. My testing has consistently shown that AMD systems can keep up with Intel with a single GPU but put a second GPU in there and the ~100% dual GPU scaling seen on Intel i5 2500K and up disappears even on the 8150 at 4.5GHz. If you need the whole package then the Cobra is a good starting point at £2000. Get a better screen, sound card and SSD and it'll be £2.2k. If you don't need the screen, keyboard, mouse and Headset, ditch them and get an extra 7970, a bigger SSD and a soundcard.
