![]() Topic: Laptop getting really houtPosted: 07/Feb/2012 at 15:28 |

Hi guys, got my laptop from cyberpower a few months ago.
My specs are: Xplorer X6-7300 Notebook Intel(R) Core™ i7-2720QM Mobile Processor 2.20 GHz NVIDIA GT 540M 1GB PCIe Video 4gb RAM I am worried about the temperature that my processor gets to. I launched counterstrike source and after a few minutes my graphics card is around 60degrees, but my CPU is on 90 degrees. Also when I stream films off the internet, not even good quality, and have my 22" tv plugged in via HDMI, my CPU also reaches high temperatures of around 80 degrees. Now 10 minutes after having played CSS my processor is staying at 60 degrees. My laptop is on flat surface and it isnt hot in the room. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? I dont think so Thanks EDIT: just played again, GPU at 80-85 and all 4 processor cores between 93-97 degrees. Edited by windyboi - 07/Feb/2012 at 21:15 |

That is a little hot. First port of call would be a laptop cooler. If that doesn't help get in touch with support.

Thanks, a lot of my course mates have suggested that I open the back and get rid of all the dust, cant imagine there's that much though :/ will this void my warranty?

Unless you've been using it a lot outside or in dusty environments then I doubt there'd be that much dust to remove after such a short period.

Wasn't much dust in there at all. 60 degrees now just browsing web, it was 70 beforehand just moving some files around and skyping :O . I don't think I should have to purchase a laptop cooler when I think something is clearly up i'll ring tech support tomorrow probably..

Just to give a comparison, my new laptop (see sig) sits at about 47°C per core when simply browsing, emails etc. Playing COD4:MW they go up to about 80°C per core.

My laptop goes dangerously up to 90°C per core (i7 2630QM) when I play the old republic. I've even bought a laptop cooler from cooler master!
Its scary and I crash if I dont stop and let it rest a bit every hour and half or so. |

@CNC you probably need to clean out the vents and maybe consider replacing the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU.

Unfortunately I'm just not tech savvy or confident enough to even think about disassembling my laptop. Especially when its the only computer I have right now and if anything was to happen to it I'd be a computer-less student.
From what I know the back hatch of the laptop only allows access to the RAM. If I want to reach the heatsink I'll need to remove the optical drive, front panel and keyboard... In all honesty I'm starting to regret purchasing a laptop anyway. I don't ever take advantage of the fact that it is made for being portable apart from twice a year when I fly back to my home country, yet I have to face the hardware disadvantage a laptop has when compared to a desktop daily. Hence why I'm considering a build from here! |

Sound's like a big job to strip it down. Always a trade off with gaming on a laptop.

update: I managed to lower the temperature to 68-78°C
My laptop fan couldn't cope with the added amount of heat as a result of playing TOR (MMORPG) (which is quite CPU intensive I heard) The reason why my laptop was burning up to such high temperatures is because of the Intel Turbo Boost technology. It works more like a nitros boost to a car rather than tweaking the car engine itself so that it can go faster like overclocking it. The CPU can cope with the added stress, but the fan couldn't - laptop disadvantage I reduced the max power input to my CPU from 100 to 99 percent and now it won't go into Turbo mode. Unfortunately this means that it will only go up to 2.0Ghz instead of 2.3Ghz. so that loading time will increase, fps rate lowered etc... but at least I can play the game without fear of crashing my laptop. I haven't tried to run TOR for more than two hours though so I'll try to test it out some time soon. Don't worry I'm still looking to get a desktop from here! lol glad you sorted it all mate... altho not sure, cyber, that spraying atomized nitrous oxide across CPU temps of 90C plus..... is a good idea...
not unless you dont value your skin
However i salute your curiosity NITROS POWERED OVER CLOCKING here we come...

i dug out my uni chem books - - - yes ano its sad but i was too curious... chipsets with a temp of 90C or above are dangerously close to the 140C ignition temp of NOX.
So to compromise... CPU overclocking can be done with NOX you would just need better cooling then water And before you think of it... NO mixing liquid nitrogen cooling with heated NOX is NOT a good plan when its a case of metal next to your legs.

CO2 injection cooling it is then, easy(er) as you can get little CO2 cartridges at any Halfords etc... add a pressure release valve a bit of control circuitry, a thermal probe and a tube to point it at the CPU or GPU heatsink then see if you can shoe-horn it into a slimline optical bay.

CO2 under pressure would works since all expanding/released gases cool... so if a canister is punctured it actually gets a layer of frost from condensation on it... so cpu temps would have to be controlled at spikes though... temp its 80 probe releases stream of gas. temp drops to 40 after about 10 secs.
pros - cheap, controlable, NOT EXPLOSIVE
cons - rapid spikes in temp = lots of CO2 used = CO2 poisoning for user,
bit of a catch 22 lol... |

Yes but it'd look cool as the vapours pour out of your vents.
I knew no good would come of being made to spray CO2 during out annual fire-safety talk... |
