Just out of interest.. lossless taking up too much room on my iPod so i've just changed everything to 320 kbps variable, saving a lot of space.

At 320kbps you're probably not saving much over lossless.

For an iPod 192kbps or lower is probably fine.

I currently rip CDs into .flac format and then use the on-the-fly transcoding ability in Winamp to convert to 160kbps MP3 when I transfer to my phone

Oh dear.. compression is no good!!

WMA lossless is pretty good mind. Also ive come across a program lately called Reclock, which reclocks the audio in sync with the PC clock.

Big improvement in sound.

True, but for playing off a phone with limited storage you need to make compromises or spend an hour every evening transferring what you want to listen to the next day.

TBH you're not likely to be carrying around the perfect set of headphones everywhere, and aren't going to listening in perfect conditions either (trains, buses etc.) so I don't think a reasonable level of compression should be a problem

Agreed, i would never take Grado headphones on the metro to work in the mornings.

I think the basic Ipod headphones are good enough when commuting to work, so bitrate is not an issue.

I use about 192 or lower. Be honest, I'm tone deaf, it all sounds the same to me. :)
