    Posted: 26/Oct/2009 at 12:55

Luke (CyberTech) pointed out to me the Unigine Heaven benchmark, so I gave it a go on my i7 920 overclocked to 3.2GHz, with the all-singing, all-dancing Radeon HD5870.

It looked amazing!! Here's the benchmark....

When my copy of Windows 7 arrives, I'll try it again with DX11.

For a laugh, I also ran it on my "works" computer and got this....

Tom

Bit of a mish mash of settings.

Here's mine at the same settings as Tom though, just so you know how well your money was spent on the newest hardware.

E8400@3.8GHz and an ATI 4870 1GB

Tom had it running on a 9400GT, that's what your ION has right?

Same settings as tom I get 28fps in Vista, should get a little more in Windows 7 as it's on a faster HDD.

Jeez Luke! That's a cracking score! How much of that is your system? I mean, how much might it fall if you ran at 1920 x 1080 (by the way, are you on a 4:3 monitor?)

Chris - I got that error message when I tried to run the demo using a higher version of DX than I had installed.

Luke also only had 4xAA, which makes a big difference.

The 4870X2 is on a level with the 5870 in benchmarks, depending on the test being run - but with the same settings as you Tom, Luke only got 28fps, so the 5870 is nicely ahead in this one.

Aaaaah! Okay Dave. Fancy Luke cheating like that!! My ram is on it's way to Holland on an RMA so I'll have another play when it gets back.

I copied your settings (had to buy some plasma time!) and got 28 FPS, but I was also using my Vista install which is on a fairly slow HDD. It's the 8xAA that kills it as there's not usually much of a performance difference between 1600x1200 and 1920x1080 as they both have ~2Mpixels. 1280x1024 was a limitation of the screen I was using for those machines. The next CF 5870 system will be tested on 1920x1200.

I'm working on getting the DX11 mode to work on Vista but not there yet, even with the August 2009 patch I get the error.

Luke

i7, 6GB 9-9-9-24@1.4GHz, GTX295
1280x1024 @ default IQ, Full Screen

3.66GHz, DX10: 100.6
2.66GHz, DX10: 99

Very little CPU dependence, but ~12.5% slower than 5870CF and ~12.5% faster than single 5870.

I'd still like to see what Tessellation really does - could someone post some screenshots of a scene with it on and off? You can pause the camera with the spacebar and toggle the feature with F3

Cheers,
Dave

EDIT: Actually, found some here

Haha, while I was benchmarking I was thinking 'those stairs are rubbish - it's just a slope. Would be really hard to get up there'.

Now I realise it was a bump map that is actually made into stairs by tessellation. Excellent.

Luke - Bennette has run his tests at a lower resolution than most of the others - hence his higher score.

No, Bennette has a 5850 (with an OC and a damn fine MSI Afterburner fan profile) if my database is correct.

I did a little stress testing on my home PC:

32.2 DX11, 32.4 DX10, 50.9 DX9 1920x1080, 8xAA, 16xAF, Windows 7.

Correct! Its like lightning!

And yes I has a slightly smaller resolution because I only have a cheap 19" monitor and the settings used above wouldn't fit with my monitor

Hey, I recently got a new computer from you guys (which I love) and I just wanted to check my results as they seem a bit low compared to the ones already posted in this thread!!

Here's mine

Since the new release (around Fermi) performance dropped off on ATi cards and enabling extreme tessellation screws them further. It only really works on NV cards. Your scores look OK, try running in full screen mode and using normal tessellation.

Sounds like it's a bit pointless comparing Heaven 2.1 scores with those from 1.0.

With the same settings as before though I now get FPS of 42.7 - more than double before

Hope to try this out when my new PC arrives and see how well a GTX670 does .. in the meantime I'll try my old AMD setup just for laughs ... its not gonna be pretty

And the results are in for Heaven 2.0 (not sure what happened to 2.1)

E8400 Stock, AMD HD5850, 4GB Ram, 1680x1050 4xAA 16xAF, everything set to HIGH.

DX11 Extreme Tesselation
17. FPS - Score 429 - Min 6.6 - Max 47.8

DX11 Normal Tesselation
26.4 FPS - Score 665 - Min 14.0 - Max 53.8

DX10 No Tesselation
46.2 FPS - Score 1164 - Min 25.1 - Max 81.1

Not to bad for a 4 year old machine thats had nothing but a graphics card upgrade early last year. Was expecting much worse with extreme tesselation to be honest. Tho I'll prolly stick with DX10 for now
