"Not bad"
That has got to be an understatement par excellence, as Napoleon would say... But you will see that once I have whupped his Grand Armé and sent those rebellious Americans packing order in the EMPIRE will be restored. ![]() This game is going to be totally awesome, by the way. ![]() Wednesday onwards will see darkened rooms across the country [lit only by the light from LCD screens] with the (imaginary?) smell of gunpowder, half rotten corpses, and the cries of dying men and horses. It is where my Cyberpower will be put to work. Bring it on..... |

Well, I have been trying to install it since 16.50 and the damn thing is taking forever.
If I wanted to wait ages for a download I would have bought it on steam in the first place - is this some sort of instant essential update or something? Driving me crazy!

Ming ... I have been reading on the TW forums and it seems to be updating with a patch for the game.
Here are some solutions mentioned:
Quote:
Also something that worked for a friend, try deleting all local content (right click on empire in the steam menu) and start again. He had the retail disk so it was quick for him to reinstall. Hope this helps.

Thanks AmstradCPC464
I think for some reason STEAM decided to load the whole game from the internet rather than my disks.... what utter incompetence. ![]() My router had downloaded a total of 1.2GB and STEAM was telling me I had downloaded 2%; I knew that wasn't right! Seems to be loading from the DVD disk 1 now, maybe we'll make it to disk 2 this time! Well, I was hoping to be proficient in gunnery and musket fire by now but that will have to wait until tomorrow.... ![]() ...what happened to the good old days of loading your game, doing a brief authentication over the internet, and then playing the game? Then perhaps downloading a few updates in the next month or two? This game launch has NOT been smooth.... ![]() On line battles soon, though.... please, if it works.... ![]() |

Thanks again AmstradCPC464, you have saved me from massive pain and misery. Earlier I even called the SEGA support line but the nice man in India told me he could only help me with Football Manager. Er, thanks. He did confirm lots of people had called him about ETW!!
So now it is indeed doing a patch, but at a rate that is bearable and sensible, even at my meagre 1MB broadband. I just hope Napoleon hasn't made too much progress in my absence.... ![]() |

No problem Ming, glad to help a fellow ETW gamer
Enjoy ... and please let me know how the game is (impressions etc).... as I am waiting for my rig to be built and Mike to give it the finishing touches. So in the mean time I have the ETW dvd box on my desk looking at me and the manual to gaze at!!

Okay anybody experiencing problems with installing ETW from disc I have found the solution on the forums:
Since so many people are having problems, and like myself, they have the disc version, but yet steam seems to want to download the game?
Firstly if you've attempted installing from disc, but yet steam says your 'updating' Total War : Empire.. but your download is going up 1% per half hour.. that means your downloading THE GAME, not a patch. Its not your fault, dont worry, dont stress. Go onto Steam, click on Total War: Empire, then click on 'Properties' by 'Launch' at the bottom right, click on 'Local Files' and delete local game content. After you have done that, open your disc tray, insert the Empire Disc One once again, then let it autorun setup, then click on 'Reinstall the game'. This should now install Empire from the disc. Also many people with the special forces edition have been entering their special forces codes, and not the PROPER code on the back of the manual. So please check this aswell. Then, once you have installed from disc, another problem occurs, steam hangs in 'Starting to download' and doesnt download anything. Simply find Steam in your taskbar to the bottom right... make sure you completely exit Steam. Then re-start Steam, and you should now get a patch that downloads within five minutes... mine downloaded in seconds, so I'm assuming with slow speeds it will take five minutes tops. Hope this helps others who will be installing for the first time.

Thanks again, you saved me from gnashing down what little was left of my molars... ![]() I'm sure a lot of people will have suffered a lot of frustration!
Same for me, ETW was the main reason for my new Cyberpower monster, and it runs it at maxxed out settings beautifully! I think I will be doing a lot of zooming in and out at 1900 x 1200! First impressions are that this game is going to put you in a different time zone to the rest of the world around you... it is truly epic. Just messing around last night I sent some of my redcoats to sort out some Cherokee and I, er, underestimated them. How embarrassing for a TW veteran ! ![]() Edited by Ming - 05/Mar/2009 at 07:32 |

I have installed and sufferred with STEAM trying to update.
However this worked for me:
Close STEAM and then start game logging back into STEAM account when prompted - the game should then automatically update from here within about a minute.

Hi Stevo ... sounds like a good idea. Yes that was the idea of purchasing the i7 / 6gbram / gtx285 so I could enjoy this game in all its glory.
I was also hoping that us cyberpower peeps could play some multiplayer together? Anyone up for some??
Ming .... how is it going with the game? Is the gaming rig working a treat? No doubt you are busy kicking the French out of North America. Sorry to pester you, it is just that I have read the ETW manual like 5 times and feel like a kid waiting for Christmas, just can't wait to get my teeth into this!

Been playing the game for a few hours, love it! I'm scared by the size of the campaign though... its going to take forever!
Just a few negatives: -
- Naval Battles look great but are a pain in the arse to control (This may just be me being a muppet though).
- Up close the individual characters in units seem to look the same (Seems a slight step back from Medieval 2, however the animations of the models are excellent!)
- I bought the special forces edition on steam but can't work out yet if the addional units have actually been activated or not.
- Its got a fair number of bugs/glitches, however there are no show stoppers and nothing a decent patch or two won't sort out!
- It took ages to download... grrrr!

Multiplayer - up for it - need to practice a bit...
Gaming rig is working a treat - I even think the coolant got a little bit tepid last night!
Still getting to grips with the depth of this - technology tree works a bit different, map is in 3 zones with 3 separate trading zones... huge area to get your head round
Not actually fought the Frenchies yet, but I have blockaded Le Havre - or is Cherbourg? Concentrating on the Cherokee in America... finally kicked them out of Savannah, Georgia
Naval skills sadly lacking, my incompetence lost 4 of His Majesty's ships to pirates, for God's sake...
I was looking forward to an epic gaming session tonight, but it won't be later as the Mrs has booked a table at the pub for dinner... hmmmnnnn, beer..... but I will be back on it before 10
You are going to love this game! It will take forever to play.... I think I might skip Spring and come out in Summer!
Mike - I think a Total War area would be great....

Thanks for the feedback guys, confirms my decision to invest in a new rig. Next week I'll shall be gaming with the lights out and in the blue glow of the rig, building my Prussian empire.
Mike ... a TW forum area would be a nice idea if the demand is there for it. Would give us an avenue for arranging times to play online against each other....and once the MP campaign hot seat comes out .... oh my time will fly

Well.... seems like there are a few teething issues.... I just thought I'd grab a quick 40 mins to have a go at some pirates and first of all STEAM decided to hog my hard drive for about 20 minutes, running it very hard, and the saved game from last night would not load, crashing ETW, in fact !
![]() It will run a new game - just started up as Sweden - and it loaded that, but I wonder why last night's won't load? Might need to have a look at the TW forum.... Need to practice before Amstrad gets going!! ![]() |

Well, I guess you must be playing soon, Amstrad?
I put in way too many hours this weekend - cannon fire has made me a bit deaf - but this game is shaping up very nicely. Zillions of hours of gameplay...
Still the odd crash, although I wonder if that has something to do with Vista 64 and the NVidia GTX 295? Last night it crashed and reported that it had "run out of video memory"!! What, 2GB of video card memory and 12GB of DDR3 RAM not enough for you??
Hmmmn. Anyhow, new drivers are available for the NVidia so I will give that a try and just keep saving regularly... pesky pirates....

Hey folks,
I'm very excited - I have a copy of ETW in my hands and can't wait to get home from work!
However, I also want to get Steam working to start with and get DoW 2 working (have raised this elsewhere). I hope I don't have as many problems with ETW but if Ming's account is anything to go by it won't be easy ;)
Thanks for the above info by the way, I'll try and use these solutions to sort Dawn of War. (stupid steam thinking it has to download the game instead of using an actual game dvd :S)

Hi Ming .... I'll be giving it a good bash this weekend for sure.
I created a custom battle and it bloody looks gorgeous! The sound is tremendous even with the standard 7.1 onboad thingy.
I was really surprised with the install ... was expecting problems. Installed without hassle .... and restarted Steam for the patch update ... no problem.
Can't wait to get home later today .......

Oooo Er!!
After an epic struggle with Dawn of War 2 (WHY OH WHY DID IT INSIST ON DOWNLOADING!!?) I finally got it installed properly from disk around 9.45pm last night. A few levels on that then I eagerly ripped open my E:TW case.
Steam rewarded my DoW2 struggle with a no problems install for Empire =) Cue me playing the tutorials etc. I'm on the 2nd episode of R2I Campaign. Can't wait to get home and give the French a good walloping :P

Well played some RTI episode 1 last night .. tried to take that third settlement and got my butt handed to me. I was way way outnumbered.
Anyway .. I thought what the heck .. let's get some Prussian campaign action going. I was like errr, errmmm, hmmm, mmm. Spent about 2 hours looking at the campagin map not knowing where to start!
All in all, with a couple of patches to improve system performance this will be a corker! In fact one patch was released yesterday.
Just out of interest Ming .. how is the campaign map doing for you? I find I am experiencing slight intermittant lagg every so often. Nothing major, but noticeable. I know it ain't our rigs as we have enough power, so read up and seems to be some memory leak issues that patches should resolve.

I think the campaign map works OK, sometimes a bit slow, but not jerky. Definitely the game has some rough edges, I am still saving regularly because of crashes... ..shouldn't happen these days, but obviously it still does! STEAM will be interrrupting me with patches for some time, I think! I think memory leak issues is what Mike was getting at with the page file thing... if you have the page file windows is supposed to catch the memory leak before it causes a problem.......... ![]() |

I had fairly hefty "jerk" in RTI last night - attacking Fort Niagra lead to a big freeze for about 1 minute. The game resumed but that's the first of it.
Don't expect that to happen when the game says at the start: "Works great on i7!" lol ;)
