Indeed, it's generally not a very good idea to mix RAM. Putting 2x4GB in and then 2x4GB of the same make & type will *probably* work assuming you have 4 slots on the mobo but as CT said, even this *can* fail. I don't know what the failure rate is like though, I've done it once, doubling my RAM using a (presumably) separate batch about a year later and it worked fine. What to do in your situation really depends on how much money you have to play with, and the cost/benefit of various options. Even RAM of the same brand, make and model can fail if they are from different batches. Don't do it. Start with 2x4GB then replace it with 2x8GB.

Ok so I'm trying to decide between 8 or 16 GB of the Kingston HyperX RAM. I want to go with 8 and eventually add 2 more 4GB sticks, however I heard there is a problem with adding RAM. Is this problem only with adding different brands?
